What shanks can be retrofitted?
Any carbide or heavy metal shank of the size and minimum length (shank only) as follows
can be retrofitted. This includes end mill shanks, drill shanks and carbide rod.
Diameter Inch | Diameter Metric | Min Length | Head Size |
---|---|---|---|
1/2" | 12 | 3.0" | VH08 |
5/8" | 16 | 3.5" | VH10 |
3/4" | 20 | 4.0" | VH12 |
1" | 25 | 5.0" | VH16 |
1-1/4" | 32 | 5.0" | VH20 |
Shanks double (or more) the above length can be cut in half and become stub-length bars.
How much does it cost?
Pricing for retrofitting used shanks is found in the Versabar Brochure.
How long will the retrofit take?
Usually not more than 2 weeks. The exception is when only special Versabar® heads are ordered with the retrofits. In such instances, shank retrofits will wait to ship with the special heads, unless otherwise requested by customer.
How is the retrofit identified?
For simplicity, shank retrofits are assigned a part number that is identical to the standard Versabar® shank part number, except ending with "RE" (REpair/REtrofit).
What's the first step?
If the request is for a design and build custom Versabar® head, email sales@toolsaverinc.com providing as much detail as possible. If more details are required, our design department will email with the details necessary to provide the quote.
Will a concept drawing be provided for approval?
Yes, usually within 5 business days after receipt of purchase order.
How long will it take?
Special quotes are normally processed within 24 hours after necessary details have been gathered and the concept has been conceived. Lead time projection is based upon specials backlog at the time of quotation. Ship date provided on order confirmation may be longer than lead time estimate on the quotation when there is a gap of several days (weeks) between the quote date and the order date. When a shorter lead time is requested, our customer service will include Speedy expedite options on the quote.
What about a performance guarantee?
Specials are guaranteed to conform dimensionally to the approved sketch. Factors such as age and condition of equipment utilized, stability of the workpiece, overhang, programming parameters, insert geometry and grade, and variations in the material machined, prevent us from providing a guarantee of specific performance.
Is hardware included?
All Special Versabar® heads include hardware.

How much will I save?
Actual savings realized from repair ranges between 50%-75%. There are factors that impact net savings, such as when contract discounts (off list price) were extended to large volume end users. This is also the case when a manufacturer extends a deep discount in conjunction with a special promotion. In such case, value still exists in repairing the tool compared to purchasing another round of inserts to get a promoted cutter.
All repair tools are serviced with ToolSaver's 15-step repair process, regardless of condition when they arrive. Tools with replacement value over $1,000 (replacement cost) are priced using a formula that includes the base cost of the 15-step process, and the specific damage. Thus, the percentage of savings possible increases with tools of higher value, as the price is more influenced by machine time necessary to address the specific damage.
Our company has special contract pricing, is repair still cost effective?
Yes it is. To qualify for contract pricing, your plant (usually including branch locations) agrees to favor a particular brand as first choice for indexable tools and inserts. ToolSaver recognizes the volume potential of your plant and branch locations and can extend a volume discount. In such situations, tools with replacement value under $500 are carefully evaluated, and those with excessive damage are retired from service instead of repaired.
How long will the repairs take?
Generally 3-4 weeks. In critical situations ToolSaver offers its 24-hour emergency rush service. ToolSaver must have the rush tool on hand by 11:00 am Monday-Friday to be guaranteed to ship the next business day. To avoid delays, the end user should provide a full set of components and gage insert for any 24-hour rush tool.
What about warranty?
ToolSaver guarantees 100% customer satisfaction. Our warranty is found HERE.
Are components included in the repair price?
Components are not included in our quotation unless requested by customer. If requested, we can include component replacement with the following types of tools:
• All tools using "M" style hardware.
• Cartridges, boring bars and indexable drills using generic metric screws.
We do not provide replacement components on the following tools:
• Milling cutters (a generic metric screw may not be suitable and impact tool performance)
• Deephole drilling heads
• Turning and boring tools using proprietary components (i.e. rigid pull-back clamping)
All hardware (and dull inserts) removed during our repair process are returned with the tools.
Are blueprints necessary?
Blueprints are not necessary for repairing any standard catalog tooling. For special tooling, if the blueprint is available, send it along with the special tool. If not available, we can reverse engineer tools and determine the necessary dimensions and tolerances. If a tool is too severely damaged to reverse engineer, we may request a new tool sample.
What's the first step?
If the quote request is for an existing tool and you have the blueprint, please email the print to sales@toolsaverinc.com along with the quantity needed.
If the request is for an existing tool and you do not have a blueprint, please send ToolSaver a sample tool (even if used) along with the quantity needed.
If you have neither, and the tool requested is similar to a standard catalog tool, email sales@toolsaverinc.com with details and we may be able to provide a quotation from that. If not, an indexable tool specialist will contact you promptly to gather more information for the quote.
If the request is for a design and build custom tool, email sales@toolsaverinc.com providing as much detail as possible. An indexable tool specialist will contact you promptly to gather more information for the quote.
If it's a design and build tool, will a concept drawing be provided for approval?
Yes, usually within 5 business days after receipt of the purchase order.
How long will it take?
If a blueprint or sample tool is provided, quotes are normally processed within 24 hours. If our design team gets involved, the quote can be processed within 24 hours after necessary details have been gathered and the concept is conceived. Lead-time quoted is a projection based upon backlog at the time of quotation. We always do our best to meet the quoted lead-time, however, when there is a gap of several days (weeks) between the quote date and the order date, lead-time may change, based upon backlog at the time the order the order was placed. It may be possible to improve lead-time when requested, and a rush premium will be added to the quote.
What about warranty?
Custom tools are built with industry standard materials and guaranteed to conform dimensionally to the blueprint, sample, or concept drawing. Due to factors outside ToolSaver control, such as age and condition of equipment utilized, stability of the workpiece, programming parameters, insert selection and grade, and variations in the material machined; specific expectations of performance are not provided or guaranteed.
Is hardware included?
Custom tools utilizing common pocket hardware are supplied assembled with components. Custom tools that accept non-standard (proprietary) components are supplied less components, however, if you provide ToolSaver with the components, ToolSaver will be happy to install them at no charge.
